Student Handbook - Health Clearance and Insurance

Health Clearance and Insurance

Health Clearance

Information about the health clearance procedure for your program is emailed to you from the UCSB EAP office. Some students must get their exams done at SHS while others have the option to do this with their own physician. Some programs require a travel clinic. Details can be found on the UCSB EAP health website. Health Clearances take time – follow the due dates in your UCEAP pre-departure checklist and plan ahead!

Note: The SHS option will only be available during a certain window of time. Check your email!

UCEAP Travel Insurance

UC students are automatically covered anywhere in the world by UCEAP travel insurance, which includes accident/illness coverage. The premium is included in your UCEAP program fees. UCEAP insurance will cover you 14 days before the official start through 31 days after the official end of your program. The UCEAP travel insurance is not the same as GHI, and it is not a substitute for minimum essential coverage as required by the U.S. Federal Law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Gaucho Health Insurance

The University of California requires all students (at UCSB and abroad) to have health insurance coverage that is compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  This regulation applies to students that remain at UCSB and those that study abroad with UCEAP. Although students will have the UCEAP travel insurance while abroad, this coverage is not ACA compliant.  Students will need to either purchase the Gaucho Health Insurance (GHI) or submit a waiver with proof of comparable insurance coverage.  Please visit the EAP GHI webpage for details.
